Dr. Kristin Burnette is an assistant professor of Special Education in the Special Education Foundations and Research department at ECU where she teaches in-person and DE undergraduate special education methods courses. She joined ECU in the fall 2022 bringing 17 years of experience working with students with extensive support needs (ESN), including 11 years of classroom experience. She completed her PhD at the University of NC Greensboro with a focus on systemic sustainable change and inclusive education for students with ESN. During her doctoral program, she served as a graduate assistant for the TIES Center, the OSEP national technical assistance center that focused on inclusive education and systemic change. In addition to her work with the TIES Center, she served as a research assistant for an IES national research project studying the impact of malleable factors (e.g., LRE placement, curriculum, instruction) on educational outcomes for students with severe disabilities. Dr. Burnette completed her master’s degree at ECU and her bachelor’s degree at the University of NC Wilmington. Dr. Burnette has 10 publications in a variety of peer-reviewed journals. She is a co-PI on a state funded grant examining evidence-based practices for learners with extensive support needs during school closures, and a PI on a university grant examining pre-service teachers’ reflections on experiences in a variety of placement settings. Dr. Burnette will serve as Board Member and Secretary.
